1. Start with who refurbished it
There is a big difference between a device inspected and restored by a manufacturer, a specialist refurbisher, a retailer, or an individual marketplace seller. Look for a clear business identity, a real returns process, a written warranty and a description of what testing was performed. A vague “fully checked” claim is less useful than a checklist covering battery, display, ports, cameras, speakers, charging, connectivity and account locks.
2. Treat condition grades as seller-specific
“Excellent”, “Good”, “Grade A” and similar labels are not a single industry standard. Read the seller’s own definition. Cosmetic grading should be kept separate from functional condition: a scratched case can still hide a healthy device, while a pristine shell tells you very little about the battery or internal wear.
3. Battery health can matter more than a cosmetic mark
Phones and laptops are portable because of their batteries, and batteries are wear items. If battery health is important to you, favour listings that state a minimum capacity or replacement standard rather than assuming every refurbished device receives a new battery. When no battery promise is given, price the uncertainty into your decision.
4. Warranty is useful — but it is not your only protection
A commercial warranty can make repairs simpler, particularly later in ownership, but it sits alongside your statutory rights rather than replacing them. Goods bought from a trader must still be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. Keep the order confirmation, listing description and warranty wording.
5. Understand online returns before opening or activating everything
For most distance purchases, UK consumers have a limited cancellation right even when an item is not faulty. There are exceptions in law for certain categories, so read the current retailer terms. With tech, also check who pays return postage, whether the device must be factory-reset and whether accessories need to be returned.
6. Check safety, recalls and account locks
For second-hand electrical products, GOV.UK advises checking product recalls and buying from trusted sources. On connected devices, verify that activation locks and previous-owner accounts have been removed. A phone or laptop that cannot be properly activated is not a bargain.
7. Compare the total cost against new
A 15% cheaper refurbished device is not automatically better value if the new version includes a longer warranty, free delivery, a newer battery, bundled accessories or a promotion.
